The Office of Extended Studies works collaboratively with university units to develop customized courses and programs to assist organizations and their employees. Programs are delivered through traditional instruction or online technology.

ICONS Workshops

The International Communications and Negotiation Simulations (ICONS) Project, in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, University of Maryland, is an experiential learning program. ICONS uses customized Web-based tools to support educational simulations and simulation-based training. ICONS also uses its simulations to support training programs related to conflict resolution, decision making, negotiations, cross-cultural communication, and crisis management.   • Crisis Leadership Workshops: ICONS offers a series of workshops to develop and hone key crisis leadership skills including how to identify a crisis, how to assess biases in high-pressure situations, how to manage overwhelming amounts of information that crises generate, how to organize for effective decisions, and how to create and lead an effective crisis team.
  • Leadership Potential Seminars: ICONS offers a series of workshops in negotiation skills consisting of the following: an overview of negotiation strategies and tactics, case studies, role play exercises, interactive computer simulation, and opportunities for discussion. Participants work in teams to learn and practice negotiation skills.
